Meredith Monk (b. 1942, New York City) is recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time. A pioneer in interdisciplinary art, site-specific performance, and what is now called extended vocal technique, she has consistently defied categorization over a trajectory spanning the last sixty years. Her works thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound, discovering and weaving together new modes of perception. This book presents the most comprehensive survey of Monk’s oeuvre to date, featuring documentation of the two-part retrospective, "Meredith Monk. Calling", at Oude Kerk Amsterdam and Haus der Kunst München, as well as interviews, essays, and previously unpublished archival material, music notations, drawings, and photographs that underscore her lasting influence and vitality. © Hatje Cantz
